Hey folks! During this winter, which has finally passed, my boyfriend had a wish to take on some hobby. Something that would require creativity, accuracy and wouldn’t cost hundreds. So I got him a wood burner. Long story short, we kinda cooperated during last weekend and prepared this nice step by step guide showing you how to make simple but beautiful nature inspired wood burned pendant. I also prepared 16 free ready to print designs for you to try out! This is a beginner level tutorial. But if you are totally new at wood burning I suggest you to play around with your tool on a piece of scrap wood and get the basics following introduction guide, like this one on WikiHow. I added some affiliate links below in case you are wondering where to get materials and tools and want to help my blog.
Gather your material and tools
Wood burning tool (also called pyrography pen) together with variety of tips. For beginner projects you can buy very basic kit for less than 15$ at Amazon or your local hardware store.
Blank wood slices ~ 1.2 inches
Sanding paper (320)
Carbon paper (this is what I used, but graphite paper works just same)
Varnish (I used water based acrylic matte)
Printed designs (go to the end of this post to get yours)
Jewelry findings (chain, jump rings, pins, clasp and a few beads)
Brush, Pen, Scissors, Pliers
Cut out your desired design. I went for this beautiful plant motif this time but I’m eager to try them all.
Prepare your blank wood by brushing it with sanding paper for a minute or so.
Use small piece of carbon or graphite paper. Cover it (sticky side down) over wooden slice, then place printed design. Use pen or something similar to outline design. Press your pen firmly, but don’t scratch the paper!
Uncover your wood slice. Your design should be transferred. If not, you weren’t pressing hard enough. Try again 🙂
Now it’s finally time to bring out that burner! Put your thinnest tip on then turn on your iron and let it heat up. Usually takes around 3 minutes. Maybe have a glass of water or few deep breaths during this time.
Start to carefully trace the outline of your design. Don’t rush it. Enjoy the smell of burning wood, I just love it.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. If we want that, we would use laser burner wouldn’t we? There is something beautiful about those imperfect lines and different pressure shades in my opinion. Something human and authentic 🙂
Now you can change to thicker tip. Be extremely careful and use pliers to do that, since iron is pretty damn hot! Slowly fill in your design.
Maybe add some extra embellishments? I asked for my beloved to put some dots obviously. Let your imagination go crazy! Also its time to make a tiny hole for your pendant to hang. Just hold burner tip in one place until it burns trough.
Put out your burner and let pendant rest for a while until it gets cold. Cover it with varnish to seal things in. Leave to dry and take a break.
Now it’s jewelry assembling time! Just take a desired length of chain, put a jump ring trough wood slice and prepare eye pin with few beds of your choice. Read my triangle pendant tutorial on more detailed instructions about working with pins.
Assemble everything and you’re ready to go!
Play around with different designs and beads. Maybe it’s time for a surprise gift to your friend, sister or mom? Wouldn’t she like handmade wood burned pendant? I know I would.
